Practical course of rromani - Gheorghe Sarau

Professor emeritus doctor Gheorghe Sarau is the creator of a complete system, unique worldwide, which led to the introduction of the common Rromani language in Romania at all levels of schooling and to the birth of a multitude of intellectuals of Rromani ethnicity. Mr. Sarău is the biggest specialist in the Rromani language that Romania has, and one of the most important specialists in the Rromani language worldwide. Students from all over the world come to Romania to listen to his courses.

This practical course was successfully used in the 43 intensive summer courses organized by the Ministry of Education in Romania, for learning and perfecting the knowledge of the common Rromani language, but also individually, by people interested in learning this language. This Practical Course promotes the common Rromani language, which is a balanced standard language open to all dialects in Romania and abroad. It uses the official international Rromani alphabet, adopted in 1990 during the 4th Congress of the International Rromani Union (IRU). Both beginners and advanced learners who used this Course made quick progress in developing their language skills.

New content is introduced gradually and in a learner-friendly way. The Rromani texts in the first five modules are followed by an English translation, each module comes with a Rromani-English vocabulary, and a Key to Exercises section is provided at the end of the book. This ensures good results both in a self-study or a classroom setting. Furthermore, this Practical Course incorporates the common Rromani vocabulary and provides a path to acquiring effective communication skills, allowing the learner to converse without hiccups with speakers of any Rromani dialect.

The common Rromani language ensures the deciphering of any Rromani text, spoken or written, regardless of the area of distribution and dialectal origin. Starting from 2022, at the market’s demand, since there is no practical course in Europe to learn the common Romani language, the course has been translated by Sigma Publishing into English and French.
